Just wanted to update you on my week. Day one - thought about what I wanted for a backing. One that is one piece? One that would be several lengths of fabric sewn together? Finally decided on just one large piece. Day two - searched online for fabric without success. Day 3 - went to Atlanta and found some fabric! It wasn't on sale but it was 120" wide and that was what I needed to make it one piece.

Some days I accomplished more than others but I am staying focused on my gift of quilt making. Don't get discouraged if you miss a day or even two days, you can always pick up and keep going.

Day by Day

"Oh, places you'll go and the places you'll see"  Dr. Seuss

How have you done with identifying one gift and doing something with it every day? I did well, every day I spent time working on one quilt that will be raffled off to raise money for a friend who has cancer.

Something became very clear to me while working on this quilt. My gift - talent some would say - of quilting and working with fabric and thread, comes very easily to me and brings me great pleasure. Through the pleasure of quilting, I am able to bring great joy to another person.

Did you notice other's response to your daily gift? Did someone smile because of your gift? How did you feel every day as you did something with your gift? It should lift your mood and add a bright spot to your day.

Here's a thought for this week. Using the gift you have identified or choose another gift, continue to use it every day. This week please write what you did on a calendar, planner or somewhere where you can easily see it.  An example for me working on the quilt would be:

Day 1 - Press and cut fabric
Day 2 - Assemble squares into short strips
Day 3 - Assemble short strips into finished lengths
Day 4 - Press all strips. Lay strips on the floor to determine placement in the quilt.
Day 5 - Pin strips together. Sew strips together to create quilt top.
Day 6 - Press the top. Measure, cut, and sew borders onto quilt top.
Day 7 - Shop for quilt backing.

As you can easily see, I didn't finish the quilt in a week, I didn't interact with others except the day I went shopping, but I felt incredibly empowered by using my gift of quilting. I'm looking forward to quilting the finished top and adding the binding over the next week.

This is my gift to myself and to my friend with cancer. Today is Day 1 for your gift, write it down and give yourself a brighter day by recognizing the gift you have.
